Pets travel scheme
Flying into the UK
A simple overview of what you need to do, and when, to bring your pet cat or dog into the Uk (from Bahrain) under the Pets Travel Scheme. You must:
Have your pet microchipped - this must be done by your vet (ISO standard 1178) before any of the other Pets Travel Scheme requirements are met as the microchip is the means by which your pet will be identified at each of the required stages.
Have your pet vaccinated - once your pet has had a microchip fitted it will need to be vaccinated against rabies. If your pet is being prepared for travel from Bahrain, the rabies vaccination must be vet verified as having been carried out in Bahrain.
Have your pet's blood tested - 30 days after the vaccination your pet will need to have a blood test carried out to ensure that the vaccine has given an adequate level of protection against rabies.
Get a PETS certificate - six months after the blood teat you can apply for a PETS certificate from the local vet
Have your pet treated for tapeworm and ticks - 24-48 hours before your pet travels to the UK you must have your pet treated for tapeworm and ticks. A qualified vet can do this, however you must ensure they issue an official certificate of treatment (EU998/03). Without this certificate your pet will not be released to you under the Pets Travel Scheme but will need to go into temporary quarantine (at the pet owner's expense) until treatments have been completed successfully.
Sign a declaration of residency - when completed and signed this form confirms your cat or dog has not been outside any of the Pets Travel Scheme qualifying countries over the previous 6 months.
